Tivoli - One of the Oldest Amusement Parks in the World
The founder of Tivoli, Georg Carstensen, successfully persuaded the then Danish King Christian VIII to grant him the land by arguing that people who are entertained are less likely to dwell on politics. From day one, the public was captivated by the park's elegant and exotic design. Among its notable guests was the Danish poet Hans Christian Andersen, who was inspired to write the fairy tale “The Nightingale”. Walt Disney also drew inspiration from Tivoli for his own Disney World. Since its inception, Tivoli has continued to be a beloved venue for entertainment and fun.
Exploring Beautiful Places at Tivoli
The park is famous for its beautiful garden landscape, adorned with exotic plants and ancient trees, providing a green oasis in the heart of the urban capital. Throughout the park, numerous retreats offer visitors a chance to pause and appreciate the serene surroundings. One of the highlights is the Hanging Gardens, perfect for picnicking or simply relaxing while enjoying views of the Tivoli Lake. The Orangery, with its classic, airy, and nostalgic ambiance reminiscent of traditional botanical gardens, is surrounded by well-maintained green spaces and frequently hosts outdoor concerts. At night, the park transforms under the glow of thousands of colorful lights, creating a magical, fairy-tale atmosphere that is both unique and romantic.
Rides & Amusements at Tivoli
The rides at Tivoli are thoughtfully designed to complement the park's architecture and gardens. Some rides offer a wonderfully nostalgic experience, while others satisfy the expectations of even the most avid thrill-seekers. One of the main attractions is the Rutschebanen roller coaster, operational since 1914 and one of the oldest wooden roller coasters in the world. This historic ride, along with others like the classic carousel and the towering freefall tower, provides excitement for all ages. Additionally, the park features several modern rides that incorporate the latest technology to deliver adrenaline-pumping experiences.

Tivoli for Kids
Children will love the roller coasters and carousels, but the 30-metre-long tropical coral reef aquarium at Tivoli is also a must-see, home to over 100 different species of fish. Here you can marvel at sharks, rays, moray eels, and a plethora of colorful coral reef fish. Additionally, Tivoli features a vibrant play area for children of all ages called Rasmus Klump's World, where imagination, energy, and fun know no bounds. Rasmus Klump, known for his love of pancakes, inspires the theme of this area. When it’s time for a break, you can enjoy your own packed meals or indulge in one of Rasmus Klump’s favorite treats at the “Pandekagehuset”.
Shops & Restaurants at Tivoli
Tivoli has a wide variety of stores, including souvenir shops, design and craft boutiques, candy stores, bookshops, and gourmet outlets.
The culinary offerings in Tivoli are equally impressive. From traditional Danish dishes to international cuisine, there's something to satisfy every palate. With over 40 restaurants and eateries serving up a wide range of culinary delights, Tivoli stands out among many other theme parks, not only in Denmark but throughout Europe. The dining options span from simple hot dogs to a 3-star Michelin restaurant, providing gastro-tourists with good reasons to visit Tivoli.
Tivoli - A Cultural Venue
However, Tivoli is more than just an amusement park. It also serves as a cultural venue hosting a variety of events, including live music, theater performances, and ballet. The Tivoli gardens serve as a stage for both international stars and local artists, making the park a vibrant hub for the performing arts. During the summer months, the famous Friday Rock concerts feature well-known artists and bands.
The close collaboration with Queen Margrethe will continue in 2024. On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Pantomime Theater at Tivoli, the Queen was deeply involved in the design of the set and costumes, working closely with the Tivoli staff.
