The Caves of Nerja
The Caves of Nerja
The Caves of Nerja, known in Spanish as the Cuevas de Nerja, are one of the town's most significant and popular attractions. Situated just a few kilometers from the town center, these caves are one of the most important archaeological sites in Spain, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region's ancient history.
The caves were discovered accidentally in 1959 by a group of local boys hunting bats, and since then, they have drawn visitors from around the world. The caves stretch for nearly 5 kilometers, although only a portion is open to the public.
The caves are divided into three main galleries — Show Gallery, Upper Gallery, and New Gallery. The Show Gallery is open to the public without a guide and features several chambers with stunning natural formations of stalactites and stalagmites.
The Upper Gallery, discovered in 1960, and the New Gallery, discovered in 1969, contain artwork believed to be over 42,000 years old. They are only accessible during pre-booked guided tours. The cave art, consisting of seals and abstract symbols, is among the oldest known artwork in the world, and some of it may have been created by Neanderthals.
One of the chambers, known as the Cataclysm Chamber, is believed to be one of the largest cave chambers in the world. The caves are also home to a large colony of bats.
The caves also host an annual music festival, the International Festival of Music and Dance, where the main hall inside the cave is transformed into a concert venue, creating a unique and atmospheric experience for performers and audiences alike.
Visiting the Caves of Nerja is a must if you're in the area. The combination of natural beauty, historical importance, and cultural events make it a destination unlike any other.
