Tips from owner:
The Dordogne is an old region with an eventful history. Within a one-hour drive there are lots of interesting sights. Huge castles such as Beynac, Castelnaud and Montfort, high above the Dordogne River, the ruins of Commarque and its fascinating surroundings. Dating from far before those times is the grotto of Lascaux where in a facsimile the old beautiful drawings are perfectly rendered. All over through the whole district there are grottos worked on by human hands or other ones where stalactites and stalagmites offer a fascinating picture. In the Gouffre de Padirac one can sail the underground river. Domme, an old bastide town high above the Dordogne River offers a phenomenal view and one can visit a beautiful grotto there. Rocamadour, the old pilgrimage place is build vertically along a sheer precipice and part of the road to Santiago de Compostella. There is hardly a place in the area that is not worth seeing! Hiking trails are easy to find and lead past old farmhouses and sometimes a megalithic grave. Old paths between stonewalls connect the hamlets, the ‘chemins ruraux’. There are many small Roman churches where in summer, in some of them, concerts are held. The VVV’s in Sarlat (Dordogne) and Gourdon (Lot) give information about concerts, markets and much more. There are golf courses. A beautiful one near Vitrac runs alongside the Dordogne River. On the Dordogne River one can rent canoes and there are shuttle services. It is a delightful way to see the landscape from a different point of view. Many villages organise a ‘vide grenier’ or brocante markets. They are indicated by colourful signs on the roadsides. Bouzic is a hamlet that used to have many more ‘cheminees’. Looking over the bridge across the Ceou you see the small trout in the clear water. On the banks a kingfisher flashes past. In some places of the Ceou, you can picknick on small beaches while the kids play in the shallow water. In the summer on Tuesday evenings a Marche de Producteurs is held in Bouzic. At different stalls food, fresh from the farms can be bought and consumed at long tables. There is a huge barbeque and the local wine is good. Other villages in the neighbourhood also organise this kinds of lively evenings. Shopping can be done in Daglan, 4 km, and in Cenac, 12 km, where on Tuesday morning a market is held. Gourdon is a bigger town with on Saturday a farmers market and supermarchees are open all week in summer. Each Sunday there is a nice small market in Cazals with ecological products. Further on you will find Les Arques , a delightful little village with Zadkine’s museum. Also from this village nice walking trips are possible, for instance to a small chapel with charming old fresco’s. As said before, there is hardly a place not worth seeing!
