Holiday Experiences in Alicante
Alicante is a Mediterranean port city in southeastern Spain with a wide variety of family-friendly activities, ranging from tours of a medieval fortress to leisurely afternoons on one of the city’s many beaches. These five are among the best things to do while living in a holiday home in Alicante.
Alicante’s old town is out of a painting, and it is an excellent place for a morning walk with the family either on your own or with a guided tour. The streets are winding and narrow, with stairways giving sporadic glimpses of the city outside. Lining the streets are old white houses decorated with blue and red pastel doorways and intricate tiles. Mediterranean potted flowers and iron lanterns hang from the walls. Barrio de la Santa Cruz has the feel of an Andalusian small-town while being right inside the city.
This castle is a medieval Muslim fortress on a hill above the city. You can either climb the steep incline, drive or take the lift to the top, where you will be greeted with panoramic views of the Spanish city below and the Mediterranean Sea in the distance. The view from the top is particularly spectacular at sunset. The castle, built by the Moors in the 8th century, contains a museum detailing its history. Guided tours of the fortress are available.
Located in the heart of Alicante, this waterside walkway is lovely for an evening stroll. The colorful, zig-zag patterned path is lined with palm trees, open-air restaurants and a variety of stands selling just about everything. There are many spots to sit in the shade and rest along the way.
Alicante boasts a multitude of beaches, but the most popular and centrally located is the Playa del Postiguet. At this well-maintained urban beach, you can rent parasols and beds to relax or read while the kids play. The beach even has play areas for children. Alternatively, the Playa de San Juan is further from the city center and is less popular for tourists, making for a quieter beach experience. This beach has large, safe walkways and play areas for kids. Here you can play beach tennis or football.
Alicante has several excellent museums, but the MARQ, or Museo Arqueologico Provincial de Alicante, is an essential stop. The MARQ is Alicante’s archaeological museum, featuring prehistoric exhibits and ancient Roman artifacts from the region’s history. The MARQ was even named Spain’s Museum of the Year in 2004. This museum overlooks the Illeta dels Banyets, local ruins dating back to prehistory, where you can swim in the same waters locals swam in thousands of years ago.
