Hike Your Way Through the Scenic Region of Auvergne

The Auvergne region of France provides you with breathtaking views, incredible nature walks, and sights you might have never expected to see in France. The Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d'Auvergne is one of the most extraordinary places in Europe. One of the largest natural parks in France, this vast, expansive nature reserve includes options for hiking, biking, horseback riding, river rafting and so many more natural activities.

If you and your family have a love of activity and excitement, then you'll never forget your time spent at this park. However, the park is most famous for the Chaîne des Puys from which it derives its name. This refers to the chain of volcanic hills running through the park, which are unique in France and most of Europe, which are straddled by their own hiking trails and rock-climbing opportunities.

You can hike atop the various, impressive mountains that tower above the rest of the scenery, and rest for a while as you appreciate the beauty of nature.

After you've finished your tour of the park, you can treat yourself to the ancient capital of Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand. Dozens of medieval towers, some approximately a millennium in age dot the skyline of the town, hinting at the vast history contained within its boundaries.

But alongside the magnificent, deeply atmospheric Old Town, the perks of the modern world are prominent in the city center. Shopping opportunities are plentiful, and there are many cafes and restaurants. If you take your vacation in February, you'll even be able to enjoy the famous International Short Film Festival that's hosted in the town. 

But Clemont-Ferrand is only the first of the incredible, aged towns to be found in Auvergne. Names like Brioude and Saint-Nectare, La Chaise-Dieu and Riom are incredible testaments to architecture and the ancient history of France. Throughout the towns and the rest of the region, you'll be treated to Medieval, Baroque, Gothic, and other styles, and each has a unique feeling unto themselves.
