Water Adventures in Mecklenburg Lake District

If water activities are a priority for your family holiday plans, then the Mecklenburg Lake District in Germany is the perfect destination.

Located in the NE corner of Germany, it is one of Germany's coldest regions yet offers plenty of pleasantly warm days from May through September to enjoy water sports and activities of all kinds.

Known as the "Land of 1,000 Lakes", most of which are connected by streams and canals, this mostly flat, sparsely populated terrain is filled with forests, lakes, and marshes. Sports-minded nature lovers will delight in the unspoiled beauty of the countryside, dotted with small towns, quaint villages, stately manors, beautiful estates, and ancient castles.

Renting a holiday home in Mecklenburg Lake District puts you in the middle of all the natural beauty and away from the tourist traps of large cities. A holiday home rental gives you the comforts of home with additional family fun time in a relaxing atmosphere.

Explore one or more of the myriad waterways via canoe or kayak or rent a houseboat and spend the entire day drifting around one of the many area lakes. Germany's largest lake, Lake Muritz, is located in the district and is bounded by Muritz National Park - a World Heritage Site. A bike or hiking tour of the park brings you in touch with some of the unique flora and fauna of the area.

The largest city in the District is Rostock, situated on the Baltic Sea. Besides being home to the world's oldest university, it also offers plenty of activity for the whole family. Kuhlungsborn Beach, just outside the city, has amazing white sands and the opportunity to try wind-surfing or kite-sailing.

Zoo Rostock has done wonders with animal environments built to be as natural as possible. The zoo also contains playgrounds and water games for children of all ages. The entire family will love a ride in one of the restored 100+-years-old coaches of the Mollie Steam Train.

A visit to Schwerin, one of Germany's oldest cities, should include a tour of the historic Schwerin Palace. You may even catch a glimpse of the ghost, Petermannchen, who supposedly haunts the palace. Take a leisurely stroll through town to admire the many fountains, statues, and art works on display, and drop in to take a tour through one or more of the several museums scattered through the town. These museums cover everything from art to history, something of interest for everyone.

You'll be pleasantly surprised at the diversity of things to see and do when you plan your holiday around the Mecklenburg Lake District of Germany!
