The Beautiful Historic Picardie Region

The fortress towers over the Forest of Compiègne and was made famous after appearing in a number of movies and TV shows that included “The Man in the Iron Mask” and the BBC series “Merlin." The massive complex was constructed during the 15th century and renovated four centuries later.

The interior provides a glimpse as to how the local flora, fauna and mythological creatures inspired the architecture and displays. The underground level of the castle particularly appeals to youngsters with its macabre atmosphere and special effects. 

Anyone interested in military and war history should make a point of touring the Musée Somme 1916. The facility commemorates a battle during WWI and features exhibits underground in a medieval tunnel.
