The Rhone-Alpes of France: Majestic Mountains and Cultural Richness

Now part of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the Rhone-Alpes region of France sits nestled in the southern part of the country, bordering Switzerland and Italy.

It is home to the famous cultural hub city Lyon, which is the capital of the region. The Rhone-Alpes region oozes natural beauty and historical charm. A trip to the Rhone-Alpes wouldn't be complete without skiing. Some of the best places to take on the snowy slopes include Samoëns, Chamonix, and Morzine.

Over half of the Rhone-Alpes region sits above 1,600 feet and the region is home to the famed Mount Blanc. Glaciers and white snow cover these mountains, making them superb for skiing. 

The Lyon Museum of Fine Arts is another must-see when visiting the Rhone-Alpes. What was once a magnificent palace in the 17th century is now an art museum filled with stunning collections from around the world. Egyptian muses and European artwork are just some of what the museum presents to its visitors. The Alpine Museum in Chamonix is also a favorite. 

For a step back in time and a look at the region's architecture, look no further than the town of Vizille. Here, you will be able to witness the Château de Vizille, an important landmark of the Dauphiné Region. Other towns that are home to architectural wonders include Tournon, Chambéry, and St-Etienne. 

If you are up for an outdoor adventure, Lake Annecy is a serene getaway from the busy towns and cities. Its sparkling waters are surrounded by prominent peaks that reflect their majesty in them. Beautiful waters and beaches give you plenty of opportunities to swim, run, play sports, or go kayaking. You can even bike the 25-mile trail that goes around the lake for a day of exercise and natural beauty. 

While you're in Lyon, be sure to stop by and see the Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière. It looks like something right out of a storybook! The basilica is gilded in gold and features marvelous architecture and stained glass. It is truly a sight to behold. The basilica can be seen from almost anywhere in the city, but you will want to go inside to marvel at the lavish interior.
