The island’s former capital of San Cristóbal de La Laguna is a historic city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site (one of two, along with Mount Teide). If you are not sure where to start, many tours are offered focusing on notable sights — on land or by boat. 

Tenerife features a lovely landscaped zoo, Loro Park, featuring gorillas, tigers, a penguin habitat, and dolphin shows. Zoo Tenerife Monkey Park is another option that is focused on endangered primates and allows visitors to participate in feeding.

Several museums are clustered around the northeast side of the coast, including the Museum of Nature and Man, Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Correillo La Palma maritime museum. There is something to please everyone in the family. 

Every February, the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife occurs in the capital of Santa Cruz. Unlike many cultural events, this Carnival lasts for up to three weeks. The main event is the opening parade, which takes place on the Friday before Ash Wednesday. The streets fill with floats, decorated in over-the-top Carnival style. The parade is finished off with a giant fireworks display. This celebration — considered by many to be Europe’s top Carnival event — is not to be missed. 

With its abundant natural beauty including beaches, forests, and Spain’s tallest mountain, those seeking an active holiday are sure to find many options.
