Visit Beautiful Flanders

Flanders is synonymous with the Flemish portion of Belgium. As such, the people of Flanders primarily speak Dutch and live in a region with a very unique culture that draws primarily from Dutch culture, but also has many other influences.

Flanders has many beautiful things to see, so if you manage to find yourself a holiday home in Flanders, you ought to prepare yourself. 

First of all, Flanders possesses the beautiful and ancient city of Bruges. Anyone interested in medieval history, ancient architecture or anyone who simply wants to walk around and feel like they are part of a fantasy novel will really like Bruges. Bruges is made of a number of buildings that really haven't changed much since medieval times. Just stepping foot onto one of the city's cobbled streets will make you feel as if you've been transported to another century. 

If you like Bruges, you'll probably also like the Gravensteen - a gorgeous stone castle from the 12th century. You can take a 45-minute video tour there. If you want sensational details about torture methods from the medieval era, this is the place to go - the castle has a prison room you can tour and a variety of ancient torture instruments on display. 

If you like art, we would recommend the Groeningemuseum in Bruges. It houses a variety of paintings in the beautiful styles of the Renaissance and Flemish Primitive. The museum also has several of Jan Van Eyck's masterpieces. 

Flanders isn't just famous for its ancient history, however. It also played an important role in both World Wars. As a result, Flanders is spotted with solemn battlefields where valiant men and women lost their lives. There are many war memorials to be found in this region, as well, if you are interested in knowing more about these dark times in history. 

If you like Art Nouveau and diamonds, then Antwerp is well worth a visit. Take the train there - you'll be greeted with one of the most beautiful train stations in the world, created in the Art Nouveau style. The entire town is littered with diamond stores, so if you are considering getting some jewelry for you or someone else, this may very well be the best place to be. 

Flanders is also famous for cycling, so if you enjoy cycling through fields and cities alike, Flanders has you more than covered. The region has numerous bicycle-friendly roads and even hosts numerous cycling races. 

If you're looking for a quaint place to visit, consider going to Mechelen. Mechelen is small and picturesque, featuring grand palaces and centuries-old churches in the baroque style. It has a famous school specifically for teaching students how to play church bells, and it shows. If you'd like a relaxing day, visit Mechelen. There, you can sit outside a cafe and calmly sip a drink while you listen to the sounds of the church bells.
