Livorno: An Ancient City with Panache

With its large port and blend of old and new, Livorno is a great place to take the kids.

The fort was an addition to the city’s defenses, and it was constructed as a backup to the first fort. Designed in a traditional pentagonal style with a number of pointed battlements, the structure is imposing and bound to inspire intrigue. A canal protects it from all sides while the ancient walls remain intact.

As you reach the center, you’ll be rewarded with the sight of a beautiful garden and well-manicured grounds. Today, you and your family can stroll through the grounds, explore the fort’s passageways and tour the battlements. When you take this tour, you’ll have a tremendous view of the city and the canals. 

As a visitor to Livorno, you’ll have the chance to spend some time at Nuova Venezia, or New Venice, touring the canals.

If you start your walking tour at the Scali delle Ancore, you can make your way around the central canal and over the Via della Venezia bridge. From this spot, you’ll be able to see the site’s picturesque waterways and tiny sail boats that line the canals.

Keep walking toward the Scali del Reugio to catch a sight of the Chiesa di Santa Caterina before making your way to the Fortezza Nuova. Plan to spend a few hours here because the entire area is exceptionally charming, which makes it an enchanting place to explore and take photos.
