Livorno: An Ancient City with Panache

With its large port and blend of old and new, Livorno is a great place to take the kids.

During the Renaissance era, the city was fortified with towers, city walls and forts, making it a destination with plenty of history and interesting sites.

Reserve a holiday home in Livorno to relax and see the city at your leisure.

The Livorno port is a beautiful site. It is also monumental and busy. While touring the area, you’ll find plenty to see and do. Reaching from the peaceful harbor at the Livorno Aquarium to the canal opening that merges with the river Arno, the Livorno port includes a blend of recreational cruise and commercial shipping terminals.

As you walk through this massive port, you’ll have the incredible opportunity to see how an operation of this size functions, making this as much of a learning experience as it is stunning. It’s also fun to watch the monolithic cruise ships pull up to the dock to release thousands of passengers who are on their way to see the sights.

Fortezza Nueva is another fun place to take the family. It was built during the mid to late 1500s, so it is truly amazing that it’s still standing. The fort was an addition to the city’s defenses, and it was constructed as a backup to the first fort. Designed in a traditional pentagonal style with a number of pointed battlements, the structure is imposing and bound to inspire intrigue. A canal protects it from all sides while the ancient walls remain intact.

As you reach the center, you’ll be rewarded with the sight of a beautiful garden and well-manicured grounds. Today, you and your family can stroll through the grounds, explore the fort’s passageways and tour the battlements. When you take this tour, you’ll have a tremendous view of the city and the canals.

As a visitor to Livorno, you’ll have the chance to spend some time at Nuova Venezia, or New Venice, touring the canals.

If you start your walking tour at the Scali delle Ancore, you can make your way around the central canal and over the Via della Venezia bridge. From this spot, you’ll be able to see the site’s picturesque waterways and tiny sail boats that line the canals.

Keep walking toward the Scali del Reugio to catch a sight of the Chiesa di Santa Caterina before making your way to the Fortezza Nuova. Plan to spend a few hours here because the entire area is exceptionally charming, which makes it an enchanting place to explore and take photos.

When you decide to stay in a holiday home in Livorno, you’ll have a quiet haven to return to at the end of each day, which is perfect for when you need downtime. You’ll also have the chance to experience what it’s like to be a local, kicking the holiday experience up a notch.
